chihuahua is a toy group dog breed and loves attention

It’s called Toy Group, but they are certainly no toy! Of course, they should be considered and treated like dogs. They deserve just enough training and attention as other groups, not that I’m worried about that because who wouldn’t love one of these cute furry friends!

What is a Toy Group dog breed?

Originally bred to be small, loving companions. Cherished by royals, nobles and families for centuries. Even though they have been bred as companion dogs they are still very energetic and lively. They might be small, but they have a hell of a character. All things considered it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they are super loyal and devoted to their owners.

Characteristics of Toy Group Dogs

Toy Group dogs are bred to be companions, so their traits also represent that!

  • Cute and tiny: Most likely not heavier than 15 pounds each, making them easy to take with you where ever you go. Perfect for people living in a apartment, city or smaller spaces. I should have though about this before living in a car with Shiva..
  • Loving and loyal: Prepare yourself for the most loyal friend you could image. Toy group breeds will create a deep bond with their owners. Just being around you, sitting on your lap or follow you around is all that they want.
  • Trainable but stubborn: Don’t underestimate their intellect, these dogs are actually very smart. Which makes then good to train. Even tho their stubbornness could be a issue when you’re not consistent enough.
  • Strong Characters: Even though they are small from size, there bold personality can create some funny moments. They are generally very playful and entertaining.
  • Low exercise: As they do require less exercise then most other groups. They still have to release their energy, but they prefer to do this indoors in the comfort of your home. So small walks is enough, but make sure you play enough with them at your home.

Things to consider before getting a toy group dog

Even though they are very small, they still have some needs you should really thing about before getting a toy group dog breed.

toy group dogs need playtime and attention
  • Soft Treatment: Toy breeds are small and delicate, meaning they can be easily injured, especially by rough handling or accidental falls. Households with young children need to teach how to gently engage with these breeds to make sure nothing bad happens!
  • Playtime: Despite their small size, many toy breeds are energetic and need daily exercise and mental stimulation. While they don’t need long runs or hikes, regular playtime and walks are important to keep them happy and healthy.
  • Human Attention: Toy breeds thrive on close human interaction and can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. Potential owners should be aware of having enough time and the lifestyle to make sure that their dog gets what it needs.

Training with the Toy Group Dogs

Training with these little friends can be very fun! It does require patience, practice and consistency, but if you do you’ll get a little show dog in return.

As always Positive Reinforcement, It might be even more important with this kind breed to avoid punishment, as they are very sensitive. Positive reinforcement training is the way to go. Make sure to socialize your dog on a early age, especially with this small breed.

Shiva and i visit a lot of different countries and cities, and I’ve to say that these kind of breeds are almost always the aggressive dogs towards Shiva and when i see how the owners are handling their dog in that moment, i think it is important to make people more aware of the importance of training with this kind of breeds.

The Online Dog Trainer made a special online course to help your dog with their aggressive behavior, if your dog is showing this behavior it might be a good idea to take a look at it!
