Things to think about before taking a terrier in your house

When bringing a terrier into your home, there are three key things you need to ensure to keep them happy and healthy:

  • Exercise and Mental Stimulation: Terriers are highly energetic dogs that require a lot of physical activity. Daily walks, playtime, and mentally engaging games (like puzzle toys) are a must if you want to take care of a terrier at your house.
  • Giving clear boundaries: Terriers are independent and can be strong-willed, so consistent training with clear boundaries is crucial. Positive reinforcement methods work best to handle their strong prey drive and stubbornness.
  • Space to Dig: Many terriers love to dig, as it’s instinctual from their hunting background. If you have a garden or space, allow them a designated digging area.

Training your terrier

You should start early with obedience and socialization training. Use their endless energy in a positive way, keep them occupied with mental and physical challenges. Sometimes their stubbornness might require some patience from your side, but never forget the consistency.
